Yestersday evening was Mid Automn Festival, for the Chinese, and Sukkot for us Jews. Today is a holiday, no school, no work, but shops are opened, and Mark is working because he went to synagogue with me on Wednesday morning and we had breakfast in the succah. Let me explain both festivals.

Mid Autumn Festival was yesterday evening, everybody goes out in the parks with lanterns of all shapes, traditionnal ones or funny ones looking like fish, animals or plants or anything. Children hold some electric ones (less dangerous than candles one). Mark and I went to Victoria Park near home, it was very crowdy, but the crowd is friendly, there is no feeling of danger, or risk of being stolen by pickpokets. I was careful of course, but did not feel threaten like in a crowd in Paris. 
Le festival de mi-automne etait hier soir, tout le monde sort et va dans des parcs alentour, avec des lanternes de formes variees, traditionnelles ou en forme d'animaux, de poissons, de fleurs ou toute autre forme amusante. Les enfants tiennent des lanternes electriques, moins dangereuses que celles avec des bougies. Mark et moi sommes alles a Victoria Park pres de la maison. Il y avait une foule enorme, mais une foule amicale, sans voyous, on n'a pas de sentiment de danger, ni le risque d'etre voles par des pickpokets. Je faisais attention bien sur, mais ne me sentais pas inquiete comme dans les foules a Paris.
For the festival, everybody eats mooncakes (it's also the full moon) and gives moon cakes to friends and family. There is a big competition of mooncakes, specially among 5 stars hotels which sell expansive and very appreciated boxes. Our bank gave us a voucher for a cheaper price for mooncakes in a certain hotel, so we got 4 boxes, 2 for Rosh Hashana (Jewish New Year) in Paris, and 2 for Hong Kong.

Lors de la fete, tout le monde mange des Mooncakes (gateaux de lune) et en offre aux parents et amis. Il y a une rude competition pour les mooncakes, surtout entre les hotels 5 etoiles, qui vendent des boites onereuses mais tres appreciees. Notre banque nous avait donne un coupon pour une reduction aupres d'un certain hotel et nous avons achete 4 boites, deux pour Rosh Hashana (Nouvel An juif) a Paris, et deux pour Hong Kong.

Cette annee, a Victoria Park, il y avait la planete terre faite en bouteilles de plastique pour rappeler au gens qu'ils devaient recycler les bouteilles de plastique. Elle changeait de couleurs et montrait les continents.
In the morning we had breakfast after service, under the Sukkah. At Ohel Leah Synagogue, they have 2 huge sukkot : The biggest one is the Orthodox one, and the less big one (but pretty big) is the Reform one. They have air conditionning and are made of bamboo and the roof of Palm trees leaves. (no photo of Ohel Leah's Sukkah this one below was found on Internet)

Le matin, nous avions pris notre petit dejeuner apres l'office, sous la Souccah. Chez Ohel Leah Synagogue, il y a 2 enormes Souccot, la plus grande est Orthodoxe, la un peu moins grande est liberale. Elles ont l'air conditionne et sont faites en bambou et leur toit en feuilles de palmier.
The Sukkot festival lasts a week and we build huts to remember that our ancestors leaved precarously in the desert after they left Egypt, and to remember that we have a comfortable life but it may not last. One day in a beautifull flat or house, the following day in a hut or concentration camp... so let's enjoy what we have and let's never complain!
When our son David was accepted in one of the best French University, I took him to Auschwitz to make him remember : One day at Polytechnique, the next day in Auschwitz!
Same way, I enjoy every minute of our life in Hong Kong and hope our happiness will last.
La fete de Souccoth dure une semaine et nous construisons une hutte pour nous souvenir que nos ancetres vecurent precairement dans le desert apres leur fuite d'Egypte, and pour nous rappeler que nous avons une vie comfortable mais que ca peut ne pas durer. Un jour dans un bel appartement ou une belle maison, le lendemain dans une hutte ou un camp de concentration. Alors, apprecions ce que nous avons et ne nous plaignons jamais!
Quand notre fils David a ete recu a Polytechnique, je l'ai emmene a Auschwitz pour qu'il se souvienne : Un jour a l'X, le lendemain a Auschwitz!
De meme, j'apprecie chaque minute de notre vie a Hong Kong et "Pourvu que ca doure"!
