We are just back from a week-end on Sentosa Island in Singapore. We had already spent a week-end in Singapore last year, and seen the fabulous Botanical garden and the brand new astonishing Garden by the Bay. So I asked our travel agent :

"- Are there Islands around Singapore, like there are in Hong Kong?"

Nous venons de rentrer de l'Ile de Santosa a Singapour. Nous avions deja passe un week-end a Singapour l'an dernier, et vu le fabuleux Jardin Botanique ainsi que le tout nouveau Jardin sur la Baie. J'ai donc demande a mon agence de voyage : "- Y a-t-il des iles autour de Singapour, comme il y en a a Hong Kong?"

"- Yes, said the travel agent, there is Sentosa!"

"- Oui a repondu l'agent de voyage, il y a Sentosa."

From there started a fantastic misunderstanding : I thought Sentosa would be like Lantau or Lamma Island in Hong Kong, National Park with nature and beautiful hiking trails....I even did not bother to ask how was Sentosa, all I asked was :"Are there any nice hotels in Sentosa?" "- Oh yes, loads of them" so I thought Santosa must be a beautiful place with lovely landscape and wildlife..... and I booked tickets for Singapore and a good hotel in Sentosa.

La commence un superbe malentendu linguistico-culturel : je pensais que Sentosa serait comme les iles de Lantau et Lamma a Hong Kong, un parc naturel, avec des chemins de randonnees... Je ne demandai meme pas comment etait Sentosa, je me contentai de m'enquerir : "- Y a-t-il de bons hotels a Sentosa?" "- Oh oui, il y en a plein!" j'en conclus que Sentosa devait etre splendide, avec de superbes paysages... et je reservai 2 billets d'avion pour Singapour et un bon hotel a Santosa.

Back home I looked on Internet and then, realised that I had booked ourselves a week-end in a sort of Luna Park or Dysney Land, for families with young children.... I was in shock till I realized that among the various island activities,was one of the world biggest aquarium, and a butterfly and insects park, a park showing Singapore history and it's local customs. After all, we could rest in the hotel garden and swim in it's pool and visit interesting marine life parks.

De retour la maison, je consultai Internet et realisai avec horreur que j'avais reserve un week-end dans une sorte de Luna Park - Dysney Land... J'etais en etat de choc... jusqu'a ce que je decouvre que parmi les diverses attractions de l'Ile, se trouvait l'un des plus grands aquariums du monde, un parc de papillons et insectes, un autre montrant l'histoire et les coutumes locales de Singapour. Tout compte fait, nous pourrions nous reposer dans les jardins de l'hotel, nager dans la piscine et visiter diverses attractions sur la vie maritime sauvage.

On Friday Mark went to work (He goes almost once a month to Singapore for work), I went to the hotel, unpacked and rushed to book a restaurant for dinner because it was Valentine's Day and all the good restaurants had been booked for months. Our hotel had a Special Valentine Buffet and I could book at 8 pm. (Hurray! Mark would be fed!!!!) Buffet is great, as we keep Kosher, (No pork, no shrimps, no shellfish, no duck, no meat... very hard to eat in Asia!!!!) with a buffet we have a better chance to find eligible food.

Vendredi, Mark est alle travailler (Il se rend a Singapour une fois par mois pour le travail), je filai a l'hotel, defis le valises et me precipitai pour reserver un restaurant car c'etait la Saint Valntin et tous les bons restaurants etaient deja complets depuis des mois. Notre hotel avait un Buffet Special St Valentin et je pus faire une reservation a 20h. (Youpee!! Mark aurait de quoi manger ce soir!!!) Un buffet, c'est parfait car nous mangeons casher (pas de porc, ni de crevettes, ni de crustaces, ni de canard ou de poulet, pas de viande... tres dur de se nourrir en Asie) avec un buffet, nous avons plus de chances de trouver ce que nous pouvons consommer.

Then I went to visit an old British fort, Siloso Fort, next to our hotel. It was very interesting. There were wax human figures of 19 and 20th centuries British soldiers, explainations on their way of life in the fort, and resume of WW2 in Singapore and Malaysia, with Japanese terrible occupation and Liberation from the Japanese in 1945 then in 1965 from the British.

Puis je partis visiter un ancien fort Britannique Fort Siloso, pres de l'hotel. Visite passionnante, montrant des mannequins en cire de soldats du XiXeme siecle, puis durant le 2eme guerre mondiale, avec des explications sur l'horrible occupation Japonaise de Singapour, sur la liberation et des Japonais en 1945 et en 1965 sur la fin du colonialisme Britannique.

The fort is huge and was ready to defend Singapor from a maritime Japanese invasion... but the Japanese arrived by land! So here is the reddition of British garnison in 1942 or 1943?

Le fort etait vaste, bien arme, pret a defendre Singapour contre une invasion maritime Japonaise... mais les Japonais arriverent par voie de terre! Ci-dessus la reddition de l'armee Britannique en 1942 ou 1943???.

As everywhere else in South-East-Asia and China, the Japanese Occupation was savage. POW suffered from hunger and bad treatment involving slave labour, civilians too were raped, slapped, starved, humiliated and forced to learn Japanese language.

Comme partout en Asie du Sud Est et en Chine, l'occupation japonaise fut sauvage. Les prisonniers de guerre souffrirent de famine, de mauvais traitements y compris de travail confinant a l'esclavage, les civils etaient violes, battus, affames, humilies et contraints d'apprendre la langue Japonaise.

Interestingly the Japanese did not treat the various populations of Singapore the same way. They mistreated the Chinese, (who had won the Japan-China war) the Eurasian, (whom they thought were pro-westerners) and the Malaysians, but they were nicer to the Muslim Indonesians and to the Indians whom they tried to convince to join the young India Liberation Army fighting already against the British.

Chose interessante, les Japonais ne traitaient pas les differentes populations de Singapour de la meme facon. Ils maltraitaient les Chinois (vainqueurs de la guerre sino-Japonaise) les Eurasiens (qu'ils supposaient pro-Occidentaux) and the Malaysiens, mais ils etaient moins durs avec les Indonesiens Musulmans et avec les Indiens qu'ils essayaient de convaincre de rallier la jeune Armee de liberation Indienne combattant deja les Anglais.

In 1945 Singapore was liberated and there was the reddition of the Japanese and among the allies signing the cease-fire was General Leclerc from France coming to liberate French Indochina.

I much enjoyed visiting this vast Fort and learning about the colonialist army way of life under the tropics, and about the Second World War in the Far East till I saw this signpost.....

Je m'amusais bien a visiter cet enorme fort et a apprendre des choses sur la vie de l'armee coloniale sous les tropiques et des choses sur la seconde guerre mondiale, jusqu'a ce que je tombe sur ce paneau qui dit : avec son epaisse vegetation, Le Fort Siloso abrite quelques especes de serpents. L'espece la plus commune trouvee au fort est celle des serpents des arbres, (arboricoles???) Bien que legerement venimeux, leur venin est peu puissant et peu dangereux pour l'homme. Si vous en croisez un, evitez de courir. Restez immobile ou reculez lentement. En cas de morsure, demandez immediatement de l'aide a nos employes.

It reads : With its thick vegetation, Fort Siloso is home to a few species of snakes. The most common apecies found at the fort are tree snakes. Though mildly venimous, their venom is weak and not dangerous to man,. If you encounter a snake, do not run. Keep perfectly still or back away slowly. If you are bitten, please seek help immediatly from our staff.

Fortunatly I came upon the post at the end of my visit, because, after reading that sign, I felt less eager to visit every inch of the fort.... and slowly started my way back to the hotel....

Heureusement, je ne vis le panneau qu'a la fin de ma visite, parce qu'apres l'avoir lu, j'avais nettement moins envie de visiter chaque centimetre de Fort Siloso... et commencai lentement a m'en retourner vers mon l'hotel...

On Saturday, we went to the aquarium and saw beautiful fish... but I had left my camera at the hotel!!! We also saw buterflies and insects of all sizes. I am fascinated by the beauty of Jellyfish, not that I like their presence when at sea, but they are so translucid and graceful that when they are in an aquarium and I am outside it... I forgive them for their ichiness and venom.

Samedi nous sommes alles a l'aquarium et avons vu de magnifiques poissons... mais j'avais laisse mon appareil photo a l'hotel!!! Nous avons aussi vu des papillons et des insectes de toutes tailles. Je suis fascinee par la beaute des meduses, non que j'aime leur presence quand je suis dans la mer, mais elles sont si translucides et gracieuses que lorsqu'elles sont dans un aquarium et moi a l'exterieur, ... je leur pardonne leur toucher urticant et leur venin.

On Sunday, another aquarium with local pink dolphins doing a show with their trainers in a swimming pool and otaries and more fish... but I had my camera this time.
