UKRAINE

Ukraine (You must not say The Ukraine, but Ukraine as they explained to me over there)... Ukraine went through a hard time and it's far from over. We went there few years ago on a Jewish heritage tour. It was very moving.

L'Ukraine vient de passer de durs moments, et c'est loin d'etre fini. Nous y sommes alles il y a quelques annees dans un voyage Juif organise. Ce fut tres emouvant.

It's not a lovely wood IT'S BABI YAR where 80 000 to 200 000 Jews where shot and buried.... just down there.
Their bones were crushed by prisonners at the end of the war so that the exact number will be for ever unknown

Ce n'est pas un joli petit bois, C'EST BABI YAR ou 80 a 200 000 Juifs furent fusilles et enterres, la... en bas....
Leurs os furent pulverises par des prisonniers pour que le nombre exact de victimes reste a jamais inconnu.

On one hand an active and vibrant young Jewish community of about 200 000 persons. On another hand Jewish mass graves at every corner. It was emotionaly exhausting and specially our visit to Babi Yar where 80 000 to 200 000 Jews where shot by the Germains and their local helpers. Another very moving time during our trip was the induction of a young Masorti rabbi Reuven Stamov.

D'un cote une jeune communaute Juive active et vibrante, d'un autre cote des fosses communes juives dans tous les coins. Ce fut tres eprouvant emotionnellement surtout notre visite a Babi Yar ou 80 a 200 000 Juifs furent fusilles par les Allemands et leurs aides locaux. Autre moment fort, de notre voyage fut l'intronisation d'un jeune rabbin massorti Reuven Stamov.

To all the people of Ukraine who welcomed us so kindly, to Ruben and Lena Stamov, to the young artists who danced, played violin, performed so nicely for us, I want to say that we think of them every day and we hope they'll be safe soon.

A tous les gens d'Ukraine qui nous ont si gentiment accueillis, a Ruben et Lena Stamov, aux jeunes artistes qui ont si bien danse, joue du violon, et chante pour nous, je tiens a dire que nous pensons a eux chaque jour et que nous esperons qu'ils seront bientot en securite.
