HONG KONG'S SHUL HAS 2 SUKHA / LA SHUL DE HONG KONG A 2 SOUCCAH

In Hong Kong, we are members of 2 shuls: Ohel Leah synagogue (the main Orhtodoxe shul) in Robinson Road and UJC also in Robinson road but a Reform shul. The Reform peoples are only tolerated by the Orthodoxes, so there are 2 different souccah. The big one in front of Ohel Leah Synagogue, and the smaller one at the back of Ohel Leah Synagogue.

A Hong Kong, nous sommes membres de 2 synagogues : Ohel Leah (la principale shul Orthodoxe) sur Robinson Road,  et UJC, aussi sur Robinson Road, la shul Liberale. Les Liberaux son seulement toleres par les Orthodoxes, alors il y a 2 souccah : la grande, devant Ohel Leah et une plus petite derriere Ohel Leah.

 

Souccah UJC

The day after Kippur, a lorry arrives from mainland China loaded with bamboo and palm tree leaves. There is a whole team of Chinese workers, now very competent in Souccah building. Within a few hours, they build 2 huge souccah with bamboo poles, and walls made also of bamboo. Than they add palm tree leaves on the roof. 

 

Des le lendemain de Kipour, un camion arrive de Chine continentale avec plein de bambous et de feuilles de palmier. Il y a aussi toute une equipe de travailleurs Chinois maintenant rodes a la construction de souccah. En quelques heures, ils montent deux enormes souccah avec des piliers en bambous et des plaques de bambous pour les murs, ainsi que des feuilles de palmier pour le toit.

In UJC souccah they add electrical lamps, electrical ventilators and white inside walls.  

Pour l'UJC, ils ajoutent des ventilateurs electriques, des lampes ou neons electriques pour l'eclairage et des contre-plaques blancs a l'interieur.

For  Ohel Leah they add a complex system of air-conditionning coming from the shul, that can be set automatially in time for the Haggim.






The first day of souccoth there were about a hundred people having lunch and dinner in the main souccah and about 30 to 50 in the UJC souccah.

Le premier jour de Souccoth il y avait environ 100 personnes a dejeuner et diner dans la grande souccah et 30 a 50 dans la souccah de l'UJC.

Inside both souccah, no fruit (for fear of insects and mosquitos and because they would rot and stink within a few days because of the heath and of the humidity.) only paper decorations made by the children, and lots of ribbons and balloons.

Dans les deux souccah, pas de fruits (par peur des insectes et des moustiques et pour eviter qu'ils ne pourrissent et ne sentent mauvais en quelques jours a cause de la chaleur et de l'humidite.) seulement des decorations en papier faites par les enfants, et plein de rubans et de ballons.

I miss the nice smell of apples and fruit of the European and Israeli souccah! But our 2 souccah here are magnificent and the food served by JCC (Jewish Community Centre) is so good and so tasty alterning Jewish and Asian glat, glat Kosher food.

La bonne odeur de pommes et de fruits des souccah europennes et Israeliennes me manque!Mis nos deux souccah ici sont magnifiques et la nourriture glat, glat Cacher, servie par le JCC (Centre Communautaire Juif) est delicieuse et savoureuse, alternant plats Juifs et Asiatiques tres, tres Cacher .

In a few days, the Mainland Chinese and their truck will come back to remove all the short time structures....ephemere but strong, last year they survived a severe typhoon without damage.

 

Dans quelques jours, les Chinois et leur camion vont revenir oter toutes les structures ephemeres... mais solides, l'an dernier, elles avaient resiste sans dommages, a un typhon severe.
