Xmas is all over Hong Kong, it's not religious, it's more commercial except for the Christians Chinese or expats and for the Philippino helpers. In the street, every body wishes us : "Merry Xmas!" so even if us Jews don't do anything for Xmas, I answer :"Thank you and Merry Xmas to you too!"

Noel est partout a Hong Kong, ce n'est pas religieux, c'est commercial, sauf pour les Chretiens Chinois ou expats et pour les helpeuses Philippines. Dans les rues tout le monde nous souhaite :"Joyeux Noel" alors, meme si nous les Juifs ne faisons rien pour Noel, je reponds: "Merci Joyeux Noel a vous aussi!"

Everywhere, Xmas decorations, fake snow, Xmas trees. It is very strange with 15 to 20 degres celcius of temperature...People do a lot of shopping, and have big family meals at home or in restaurants. Children receive many presents. The atmosphere will remain festive from Xmas to New Year and New Chinese Year (this year will be the year of the sheep).

Partout des decorations de Noel, de la fausse neige, des sapins. C'est tres bizarre par 15 a 20 degres... Les gens font enormement de courses, et de fetes en famille, au restaurant ou a la maison. Les enfants aussi sont tres gates. L'atmosphere est a la fete entre Noel, le Nouvel An et le Nouvel An Chinois (ce sera l'annee du mouton)      

We just hosted my sister in law Catherine (my late brother's widow) and her boyfriend Alain. Mark and I had not met Alain before, so we were delighted to meet him and to see Catherine so happy. They seem to have a lovely life : he has a house in Saverne where he grows a lot of vegetables and fruit, he also has some orchards with plums (quetsches) and Mirabelle (yellow plums) and apples and pears. Otherwise they also live in Strasbourg, in Catherine's flat. Both still work and look forward to retirement.

Catherine m'a offert une ravissante orchidee rose pale, achetee au Marche aux Fleurs.

Nous venons de recevoir ma belle-soeur Catherine et son copain Alain. (la veuve de mon frere) Mark et moi ne connaissions pas Alain et sommes ravis de le connaitre et de voir Catherine si heureuse. Ils semblent avoir une vie agreable, il a une maison a Saverne ou il fait pousser des fruits et des legumes, il a aussi des vergers avec des quetsches, des mirabelles, des pommes et des poires. Sinon ils habitent aussi dans l'appartement de Catherine a Strasbourg. Ils travaillent encore et attendent la retraite impatiemment.

They have seen a lot of Hong Kong and were surprised by the complexity of this city and its territory. They were also surprised to see so few foreigners, they expected Hong Kong to be "less Chinese and more English"... I think the expats were gone back home or somewhere skying for Christmas holidays.

Ils ont bien vu Hong Kong et ont ete surpris par la complexite de cette ville et de son territoire. Ils ont ete aussi surpris de voir si peu d'etrangers, il s'attendaient a ce que Hong Kong soit "moins Chinois et plus Anglais"... Je crois que beaucoup d'expats sont rentres a la maison ou partis faire du ski pendant les vacances de Noel.

Our son David is here too, he seems happy in Australia, happy with his PhD and the Melbourne university RMIT. He also enjoys going to shul and helping with the service. He sang very well during our Zmirot dinner.

Notre fils David est la egalement, il a l'air heureux en Australie, heureux de son Doctorat et de l'Universite RMIT a Melbourne. Il aime bien aussi aller a la shul et aider pour l'office. Il a tres bien chante pendant notre diner zmirot.

Mark had fantastically prepared all the singing, I had found table decorations related to music. We were 30, including 10 children. Everyone joined in singing and wished to do that again soon. I hope we created a new trend in HK.

Mark avait tout bien prepare pour les chants, moi j'avais trouve de jolies decorations de table en relation avec la musique. Nous etions 30 dont 10 enfants. Tout le monde a bien chante et souhaite refaire ca bientot. Nous avons peut-etre lance une nouvelle mode a HK.

My main worry is Myriam, too lonely in London. We would like her to join us to travel and live somewhere different for one or a few years

Mon grand souci c'est Myriam un peu trop seule a Londres. Nous aimerions qu'elle nous rejoigne pour voyager un peu et vivre ailleurs un an ou quelques annees.

2015 will be a year of great changes for us. We will start by traveling a few months, then Mark will look for missions or for a job, here in HK or in Australia. It's very exciting and as always when there are big changes, a bit scarry too...

2015 sera pour nous une annee de changement. Nous commencerons par quelques mois de voyages en Asie, puis Mark cherchera des missions ou un nouveau travail soit ici a HK soit en Australie. C'est tres excitant et comme toujours quand il y a de grands changements, un peu effrayant aussi...

Till then, we are going tonight to Cantonese opera, on the 30th of December we will hike with King and Ping, Chun Wing's parents and on Jan 5th we will go to Bali with David for a few days, while Mardee and her family will stay in our flat to look after Kai Phong.

D'ici la, nous allons ce soir a l'opera Cantonnais, le 30 Dec nous ferons une grande marche dans un parc avec King et Ping, les parents de Chun Wing, et le 5 Janvier depart avec David pour quelques jours a Bali pendant que Mardee et sa famille garderont Kai Phong dans notre appartement. 

Today the sun is back after 4 rainy and greyish days. As we say in French "After the rain, the sun is back" (which does not only applies to the weather but also to your life : after sorrows, joy will follow).

Aujourd'hui, le soleil est de retour apres 4 jours tres maussade. Apres la pluie le beau temps, au sens propre et figure!
