WEEK-END IN SINGAPORE / WEEK-END A SINGAPOUR

Mark went to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) then to Singapore for work. I joined him on Friday in Singapore for the week-end. Singapore is an island, (well, a main island and 82 smaller islands)  a city and a country The Singapore Republic. Its has a population of 5,3 millions habitants (among them 2 millions foreign residents) The Singaporians are 75% Chinese, 13% Malays and 9% Indians. There are 4 official languages : English (all school teaching is in English) Malay, Mandarin and Tamil.

Mark est alle a Kuala Lumpur (Malaisie) et Singapour professionnellement et je l'ai rejoint  a Singapour Vendredi pour le week-end. Singapour est une ile (une ile principale et 62 iles plus petites), une ville et un pays : La Republique de Singapour. La population est de 5,3 millions dont 2 millions de residents etrangers. Elle se compose de 75% de Chinois, 13% de Malais, (ou Malaisiens?) et de 9% d'Indiens. Il y a 4 langues officielles, l'Anglais (tout l'enseignement scolaire se fait en Anglais), la Malais, le Mandarin et le Tamoul.

I arrived at 4 PM on Friday (3 hours 20 mn flight from Hong Kong to Singapore) and met Mark at the hotel, we had a drink by the pool, walked in the hotel gardens which had beautiful Koi fish ,then got ready for Shabbat.

 

 

Je suis arrivee a 4 h a Singapour ( Il y a 3h 20 de vol entre Hong Kong et Singapour), j'ai retrouve Mark a l'hotel, nous avons pris un verre devant la piscine, nous sommes promenes dans les jardins qui ont de jolies carpes Koi, et nous nous sommes prepares pour Shabbat.

 

Singapour is 135 Kms from the equator so it's hot and humid all the year round (23 to 27degres in the morning and 33 to 35 in the afternoon.) I'ts a paradise for flowers and has fantastic gardens which we visitedd on Saturday.

Singapour n'est qu'a 137 km de l'equateur, il y fait donc chaud et humide toute l'annee, 23 a 27 degres le matin et 33 a 35 degres l'apres-midi. C'est un paradis pour les fleurs et il y a de fantastiques jardins que nous sommes alles visiter Samedi.

 

Friday evening, synagogue, service, then dinner at the community center with the local congregation. There is like in HK, a beautiful XIXth century synagogue, built by rich Bagdhadi Jews, there are 2 old synagogues in Singapore but only one has services every Shabbat. We were told that there are about 2000 Jews nowadays in Singapore.

Vendredi soir, synagogue, office puis diner au Centre Communautaire avec la communaute locale. Il y a comme a HK, une belle synagogue construite au XIXeme siecle par de riches Juifs de Bagdad,  il y a deux vieilles synagogues a Singapour, mais une seule a des offices tous les shabbats. On parle d'une population de 2000 Juifs actuellement a Singapour.

Community Center

Very friendly congregation, with a Loubavitch rabbi and a Loubavitch yeshiva (rabbinical school) many expats and students, Israelis, Americans, Brits, French, and locals.

 

Congregation tres amicale, avec un rabbin Louvavitch, une Yeshiva Lobavitch (ecole rabbinique), beaucoup d'expats et d'etudiants, des Americains, des Britanniques, des Francais, et des gens du pays.

 

Singapour est moderne, dynamique, tres propre, on y parle tres bien l'Anglais, le pays est celebre pour sa securite, on peut aller partout a toute heure sans danger. Samedi l'emerveillement commence avec la visite du mythique jardin botanique!

 Singapore is modern, dynamic, very clean, people speak English very well, the country is famous for being very safe, you can walk anywhere at anytime it's safe! On Saturday, amazement starts with the visit of the mythical botanical garden....
