HAPPY VALLEY JEWISH CEMETERY / CIMETIERRE JUIF DE HAPPY VALLEY

Mark is member of the board of the Hong Kong Jewish Historical Association and is currently working on their website. We were mandated to take photos of this beautiful Jewish Cemetery, so we went there with April K. who knows the place well and who showed us the interesting tombstones. I was in charge of taking photos. The land was given to the congregation by Queen Victoria says the legend, but in reality, by the Governor of Hong Kong. It is now surrounded by a Bouddhist Temple, it's school and many skyscrapers, but it remains quiet and peaceful.

                          

Mark est membre du comite de l'Association Historique Juive de Hong Kong et il les aide pour leur site web. On nous a donc charges de faire des photos du tres beau cimetierre Juif, donc nous y sommes alles avec April K. qui connait bien l'endroit et qui nous a designe les tombes les plus interessantes, et moi j'etais chargee de faire des photos. Le terrain a ete donne a la communaute par la Reine Victoria, selon la legende mais ne fait, pa rle Gouverneur de Hong Kong. Il est desormais entoure d'un Temple Bouddhique et de son ecole, ainsi que par des gratte-ciel.

A l'entree, au bout d'un chemin,
 un petit oratoire/

Then you have the Sepharcic tombstones
 (mainly Iraki, Iranian, and Indian Jews)
Puis les tombes Sepharades
(surtout des Juifs d'Irak, d'Irna  et d'Inde)

The cemetery is so peaceful and so poetical with it's palm trees and other tropical vegetation.You can see the next door Buddhist Temple.

Le cimetierre est tellement calme et poetique, avec ses palmiers et autre vegetation tropicale. On peut voir le temple voisin.

There is a big variety of tombstones, as different as the various Jewish immigrants : sailors, unknown people, lots of children who could not cope with the the tropical climate.

Les tombes sont aussi variees que les immigrants Juifs de Hong Kong, des marins, des inconnus, des Ashkenazes venus pendant la guerre, beaucoup d'enfants ayant succombe au climat.

Unfortunatly, April K was in a hurry, and after she left, it started raining and I had to stop taking photos... I will go back to do better photos, this special cemetery deserves it.

Malheureusement April K. etait tres pressee et apres son depart, il se mit a pleuvoir alors je dus arreter de prendre des photos... j'y retournerai prendre de meilleures photos. Ce cimetierre si special le merite.
