Mark in "in Europ" going to Paris, London and Rotterdam. I Used to have a cousin Veronique, in Rotterdam, she married a Dutchman... but they sold their beautiful house in Rotterdam and retired in southern France where they seem to have built themselves another magnificent house.

Mark est "en Europe" il va a Paris, Londres et Rotterdam. Avant j'avais une cousine Veronique, a Rotterdam, mariee a un Hollandais, mais ils viennent de vendre leur magnifique maison pour prendre leur retraite dans le sud de la France ou ils ont l'air de s'etre construit une autre superbe maison.

Meanwhile, we, in Hong Kong had a Typoon 8. Lots of wind and rain... I had to put cell tape on all the windows (If they explode, alt least the piece of glass remain stuck together and don't fall all over the flat. I left the cell tape, as we are still in Typhoon season, I'll remove it later.) No damage done to our flat, but just outside our building a palisade fell over, and in the streets many trees felt down and there were a few landslides and floods in HK.

A Hong Kong pendant ce temps, nous avons eu un Typhon 8. Beaucoup de pluie et de vent... J'ai du scotcher toutes les fenetres (si elles explosent au moins le verre reste scotche au lieu de tomber partout dans l'appartement. J'ai laisse le scotch en place car nous sommes encore en pleine saison des typhons, je l'enleverai plus tard) . Pas de degats dans notre appartement mais juste a cote de notre building, une palissade est tombee, et dans les rues beaucoup d'arbres aussi, et a Hong Kong il y a eu quelques inondations et glissements de terrain.

When there is a Typhoon 8, the transports stop, there is no school and people don't go to the office. Busy HK becomes a ghost town and it is so strange! At night, it was still only T3 so Mardee hurried to walk Kai Phong and they both came back very wet. Later on, it became T8 I tried to go on our balcony, but there were gusts of wind so strong that I got scared and went back inside. In the morning, after an unsetling night, the Taiphoon was decreasing so I walked Kai Phong briefly as it was still T8 going on T3.

En cas de Typhon 8, les transports s'arretent, il n'y a pas d'ecole et les gens ne vont  pas au bureau. Hong Kong si active devient une ville fantome ce qui est tres etrange! La veille au soir c'etait encore T3 alors Mardee s'est depeche d'aller promener Kai Phong et elles sont revenues trempees. Par la suite le signal T8 a ete annonce et je suis sortie voir sur notre balcon, mais il y avait de telles bourrasques de vent que je pris peur et rentrai illico. Le lendemain matin, apres une nuit agitee, le typhon s'eloigna alors je promenai rapidement Kai Phong, ca c'etait encore T8 mais bientot T3.

Mark has less work now so as we love traveling, we will progressively go to China, Myamar, Bali, Viet Nam and Cambodgia. We will start by going to Thailand (Chiang Mai) with Myriam end of September, to Japan end of November when we will meet Keiko to see the red leaves of the maple trees, then we will go to Bali with David who will come from Australia, during his Xmas holidays. 

Mark a moins de travail maintenant, alors comme adorons voyager nous irons progressivement en Chine, a Myamar, Bali, au Viet Nam, au Cambodge. Nous commencerons par aller en Thailande (Chiang Mai) avec Myriam fin Septembre, au Japon fin Novembre ou nous retrouverons Keiko pour voir les erables rouges a Kyoto, puis nous irons a Bali avec David qui arrivera d'Australie, pendant ses vacances de Noel.

I must go back to take better pictures in the Jewish cemetery. Mine were blurred and out of focus, I was told. I cannot do much better with my basic camera and my shortsightness... so I will go back with my Cantonese teacher Renee (In HK all Chinese people have a Chinese name and a European one that they use with foreigners). Renee has a good camera and lives just opposite the cemetary. She is very keen to visit it with me,(She did not know it was there, because it is so well hidden) I will tell her the angle and pictures I want to take and between us we may reach a better quality. 

Je dois retourner prendre de meilleures photos au cimetierre Juif. Les miennes etaient floues semble-t-il. Avec mon appareil photo basic et ma grande myopie, je ne peux pas faire beaucoup mieux... donc je vais y retourner avec Renee, ma prof de Cantonnais. ( A Hong Kong les Chinois ont un prenom Chinois et un prenom Europeen qu'ils utilisent avec les Occidentaux) Renee a un bon appareil photo et habite juste en face du cimetierre. Elle a tres envie de le visiter avec moi car elle en ignorait l'existence alors qu'elle habite en face. (Il est bien cache). Je lui dirai les angles et photos que je souhaite prendre et a nous deux, on devrait obtenir de bons resultats.

Renee is a great teacher. She knows that I will never be fluent in Cantonese, but taught me the vocabulary I need for every day life. I just have to remember it....which is a challenge. Then we study legends and poems that she re-writes in simple words and that we read in Chinese... well I show her the characters I know (from Japanese mostly) and we deduct what it's all about, then we study the short story, chinese character by character. I love it, it reminds me of my youth in Lang'O (Oriental Studies).

Renee est un super prof. Elle sait que je ne parlerai jamais le Cantonnais couramment, mais elle m'a enseigne le vocabulaire dont j'ai besoin pour le quotidien, et que je dois apprendre... ce qui est un vrai defi... En attendant nous etudions des legendes et des poemes qu'elle re-ecrit avec des mots simples pour moi et que nous lisons en caracteres chinois... en fait, je lui montre les caracteres que je connais (du Japonais) et on en deduit de quoi ca parle globalement, puis nous etudions la breve histoire, caractere chinois par caractere. J'adore ca, ca me rappelle ma jeunesse a Lang ZOO!

Few days ago, little Samantha (6 years old) had homework to do in writen Cantonese. Her mother Mardee, my helper, speaks a little but cannot read Cantonese so they asked me if I could help.Oh my God!!!

L'autre jour la petite Samantha (6 ans) avait des devoirs a faire en Cantonnais ecrit. Sa mere Mardee, ma bonne, parle un peu mais ne lit pas le Cantonnais, donc elles m'ont demande d'aider. Ciel!

They had understood that Samantha needed to stick 3 photos in 3 squares one of herself, one of her dad and one of her mum. But in the squares there was lots of Chinese characters explaining which photo to put where. I managed to find the cantonese character "I" that you read "N'go" and told Samantha to stick her photo in that square.

Elles avaient compris que Samantha devait coller 3 photos dans 3 carres, l'une d'elle-meme, l'autre de son papa, la troisieme de sa maman. Mais dans les carres, il y avait plein d'indications en Cantonnais expliquant quelle photo il fallait mettre ou. Je reussis a trouver le caracter cantonnais pour "Je" qui se lit "N'go"  et dis a Samantha de coller sa photo dans cette case.

Then I found the Japanese like character for "Daddy" but I could not find "Mummy" as the character was different from Japanese but I saw one with a vague similarity . Anyway, there was only on square left so it had to be Mummy's photos in there...

Puis  je trouvais le caractere japonais pour "papa" mais ne pus trouver "maman" car c'etait different du Japonais, je trouvais cependant un caractere vaguement ressemblant avec le Japonais "maman" et de toute facon, il ne restait plus qu'une case donc ca ne pouvait etre que maman.

Then it became much more complicated... Samantha had to look at the 3 photos and to write in Cantonese what feature she had from which parent. "She has my eyes and her Daddy's nose and face shape" said Mardee. Samantha was not sure but agreed. I needed to find the cantonese character for "nose", "eye" and "face". 

Puis ca se compliqua nettement... Samantha devait regarder les photos et ecrire en cantonnais quel traits elle avait de quel parent. "Elle a mes yeux, mais le nez et le visage de son pere" affirma Mardee. Samantha n'etait pas sure mais n'avait rien contre. Il me fallait desormais trouver les caracteres cantonnais pour nez, yeux et visage.

We looked on internet (nose was like in japanese but eye was very different, face was similar but I had forgotten the exact strokes to write). Then I tought Samantha in which order to write them..(it is very important to obtain a beautiful character). but I felt very ashamed that my chinese characters were as clumsy as hers... So far I know more than her but she will soon be ahead of me and teach me.

Nous regardames sur internet (le nez etait comme en japonais, mais les yeux etaient totalement differents, le visage etait assez similaire mais j'avais oublie comment il s'ecrivait.) Alors j'enseignais a Samantha dans quel ordre tracer les caracteres. (C'est tres important pour la beaute du caractere) mais a ma grande honte, mes caracteres chinois etaient aussi maladroits que les siens....Pour le moment, j'en sais plus qu'elle, mais elle va tres vite me depasser et pouvoir m'apprendre.

After this short homework, Samantha, Mardee and I felt exhausted! So I decided we should all have some rasberry ice cream!

Apres ce bref exercice pour l'ecole, Samantha, Mardee et moi etions epuisees! Alors je decretais que nous devions toutes prendre un peu de glace a la framboise!

The son of my cousin Daniel TREVES, Benjamin TREVES who is David's age et who just got married in Switzerland and Corea, is leaving Singapore to settle in Hong Kong. Yona and him are coming for dinner at our home on Friday 26 sept. I have not seen him since he was 14 years old and spent a week with us in La Saugeraie. He is now a very tall guy, working in a bank and married to a South Corean beauty. Nice to re-connect!

Le fils de mon cousin Daniel TREVES, Benjamin TREVES qui a l'age de David et qui vient de se marier en Coree et en Suisse, quitte Singapour pour s'installer a Hong-Kong. Yona et lui vont venir diner Vendredi 26 sept a la maison. Je ne l'ai pas vu depuis qu'il avait 14 ans et etait venu passer une semaine avec nous a La Saugeraie. C'est devenu un homme assez grand, travaillant dans une banque et marie a une beaute Sud Coreenne. Sympa de le revoir.

Apparently Samantha's home work was wrong, I'll try to find out what we did wrong...

P.S. apparemment les devoirs de Samantha etaient tout faux, je vais essayer de savoir ou nous nous sommes trompees...

What a relief! We did well but she had to check after finishing the exercice and to tick in 3 little squares to show she had checked.(???) Ca devait etre tous les caracters chinois qu'on n'a pas compris. So I don't need to do hara-kiri with shame.

Quel soulagement! Nous avons bien fiat l'exercice mais elle devait verifier apres avoir fini l'exercice et mettre 3 croix dans 3 cases pour montrer qu'elle avait bien verifie(???) Donc pas besoin de me faire Hara-kiri" de honte.
