PAINTING ELEPHANTS (2) / ELEPHANTS PEIGNANT (2)

ADDED 23 March 2015:

Lately I read several articles saying that the elephant in China, Thailand, in Laos and Cambodia receive a very harsh training and even "Breaking"  to break their spirit from babyhood when they are just small calves in order to make them obey and learn under hard pressure. 

Yout recemment, j'ai lu plusieurs articles disant que les elephants en Chine, en Thailade, au Laos et au Cambodge sont dresses tres durement et meme "Casses" pour  les contraindre a obeir on les

maltraite depuis l'enfance lorsqu'ils ne sont que des elephanteaux.  

They seem to be badly treated and forced to learn those tricks to please the tourists. If it is true and if they are maltreated that changes everything and I feel sorry we had such a good time watching them perform.  

Il semblerait qu'ils soient ,altraiteset forces a apprendre des tours qui amusent les touristes. Si c'est le cas, et si on les martyrise, cela change tout et je regrette profondement de m'etre tellement amusee en les regardant faire leurs numeros.

I hope that "painting elephants" have not suffered too much during their training, and that they are not hurt or badly treated in their everyday lives.

J'espere que les "peintres" n'ont pas trop souffert au cours de leur apprentissage et qu'ils ne sont pas maltraites au quotidien.

The young elephant was adding flowers on the stem on which he had already painted leaves! From time to time his keeper took the brush from him to add more painting, then, gave him the brush back, which the elephant delicately took in it's trunk.

Le jeune elephant mettait des fleurs sur la tige ou il avait deja mis des feuilles! De temps en temps, son gardien reprenait le pinceau pour lui remettre de la peinture, puis le lui rendait, l'elephant le saisissait alors delicatement dans sa trompe.

           

   

Then he left, holding it's painting materail in it's trunk. / Puis il partit, tenant son materiel de peinture dans sa trompe.

The elephant's paintings were incredible!
Les oeuvres des elephants  etaient incroyable !

                                             






Ensuite, nous allames faire une promenade a dos d'elephant / After we actually  rode the elephants...... But before that the artists came to salute their public. /Mais avant ca, les artistes vinrent saluer leur public.

P.S.  I was puzzled by this elephants paintings, and I wondered wether it was not a clever trick... I thought maybe under the paper was on the carboard below some sort of smell to guide the elephants when they painted the lines or the dots or the flowers.

P.S. J'etais perplexe devant ces peintures d'elephants et me demandais s'il n'y avait pas  un truc astucieux... Je pensais a des odeurs sous le papier impregnata le carton dessous pour leur indiquer ou peindre les lignes, les points et les fleurs.  

Then Mark found on internet an article by Desmond Morris the famous zoologist who also found hard to believe that elephants could be artists. He had a good look and discovered that the mahouts (elephant's keepers) discreetly held the elephants's ear and with their fingers gave them indications of where and how to move their brush. 

Puis Mark trouva sur internet un article par Desmond Morris, le celebre zoologue qui trouvait aussi difficile a croire que les elephants aient un sens artistique. Il regarda bien et decouvrit que les mahouts (gardiens des elephants) tenaient discretement leurs oreilles et leur indiquaient du doigt ou et comment bouger leur pinceau.

He also noticed that the same elephant always did the same painting. Nether the less, even if the elephants are not artists, they are cleverly trained and they are very bright animals with good understanding of complexe gestures and an excellent memory. Well done and well taught!!!!

Il remarqua aussi que le meme elephant reproduisait toujours la meme peinture. Quoiqu'il en soit, meme si les elephants ne sont pas des artistes, ils sont astucieusement dresses et ce sont des animaux tres intelligents avec une bonne comprehension de gestes complexes et une excellente memoire. Bravo, bien reussi et bien enseigne!!!!(Si les elephants ne sont pas martyrises et battus au cours de l'apprentissage)
