MASKED PALM CIVET

Yesterday night I walked Kai Phong around 10P.M and as we were coming back home, she suddenly stopped and would not move, she was staring at something, I thought it might be a cat.

Hier soir, je promenais Kai Phong comme d'habitude vers 10h du soir, nous revenions vers la maison lorsqu'elle s'arreta net et refusa de bouger. Elle fixait intensement quelque chose. Je pensais a un chat.

I also looked and saw in the dark some animal, too big to be a cat, with a long tail also too big for a cat... It was brown and black and had white stripes on the head and around the eyes. It had a long nose too, I thought it might be a small anteater, but its nose was not long enough.It was sniffing and eating something on the ground. It was not noticing us and did not seem scared at all. 

Je regardai moi aussi, et vis un animal dans le noir, trop grnd pour etre un chat... Il etait marron et noir avec des bandes blanches sur la tete et autour des yeux. Il avait aussi un long nez, je pnsais que ca pouvait etre un petit fourmilier, mais le nez n'etait pas assez long pour ca. Il flairait le sol et mangeait quelquechose par terre. Il ne s'occupait pas du tout de nous et n'avais pas peur. 

Kai Phong and I were fascinated, we remained there maybe one or two minutes, staring at this unknown animal, till it disappeared suddenly in the jungle at the foot of our building.

Kai Phong et moi etions fascinees, nous restames la peut-etre une ou deux minutes a regarder cet animal inconnu, avant qu'il ne disparaisse soudain dans la jungle au pied de notre immeuble.

When we came back home, I had a look on internet at "Hong Kong wild fauna" and I found it!!! A Masked Palm Civet. There were photos and it was exactly the animal we had seen thanks to Kai Phong!! I was very excited and told the story to Mark.

Une fosi rentrees a la maison, je regardais sur internet "Faune sauvage de hong Kong" et je le trouvai!!! Une civette Masquee des Palmiers. Il y avait des photos et c'etait exactement l'animal que j'avais vu grace a Kai Phong. J'etais toute excitee et racontais l'histoire a Mark.

It's a nocturnal animal, solitary and partly arboreal. When alarmed, it sprays anal secretions like a skunk, to deter predators. It lives on fruits, leaves, insects, frogs, snakes, birds, and rodents. (Wikipedia)

C'est un animal nocturne, solitaire, qui vit partiellement dans les arbres. S'il est effraye, il envoie un jet de secretions anales comme les skunks pour decourager les predateurs. Il mange des fruits, des feuilles, des insects, des grenouilles, des serpents, des oiseaux et des rongeurs. (Wikipedia)

Near our home there are 2 Papaya trees and when the papayas are big and ripe, they are half eaten, I thought by birds, but our civet is probably enjoying them too!!! I hope we'll see it again soon!

Pres de la maison, il y a deux arbres a papayes et lorsqu'elles sont grosses et mures, elles sont rongees, je pensais par des oiseaux, mais notre civette est peut-etre aussi du festin!! J'espere qu'on la verra a nouveau bientot!!!
