KAOSHIUNG (2)

On Sunday, we took a taxi for the day and went to the mountains in the east and north of Kaoshiung.

In the East, we went to Wutai, a small Rukai village. The Rukai are one of the indigenous peoples of Taiwan they are about 8000 people left. They lived in Taiwan long before the Han (Chinese) came to the island. They cultivate crops in the mountains : millet, maize,taros, yams,beans and peanuts.

Dimanche, nous primes un taxi a la journee, pour aller dans la montagne a l'est et au Nord de Kaoshiung. A l'Est, nous allames a Wutai, petit village Rukai. Les Rukai sont un des peuples indigene de Taiwan, ils sont environ 8000 encore la. Ils vivaient a Taiwan bien avant la venue des Han (Chinois). Ils cultivent dans la montagne : le millet, le mais, le taro, les pois et cacahuetes.

We stopped on the way, to take a cup of tea in a mountain village. A nice break form all those curves which made our stomach turn... The people did not make us pay for the tea which is very cheap but we found their generosity very moving. They were cooking in a stone oen,  lots of chicken for Chinese tourist buses coming later on for lunch.

                                      

Nous fimes un arret en chemin, pour prendre une tasse de the dans un village de montagne, une pause bienvenue apres tous ces tournants qui malmenaient nos estomacs... Les gens ne nous firent pas payer nos tasses de the, car le the est tres bon marche, mais nous fumes malgre cela tres touche de leur generosite. Ils etaient entrain de preparer dans des fours en pierre, des dizaines de poulets poru les cars de touristes Chinois qui allaient bientot arriver pour dejeuner. 

Then we arrived to Wutai a "big" village with a Rukai culture museum. They gave us explanation in Chinese, we asked if they had anything in English, they said no, but ten minutes later, the woman at the entrance door ran after us,  found us in the museum and proudly gave us a liflet with explanations in English about their culture and habits. Those mountainers are really happy to see westerners  and they do their best to help them and make their visit pleasant.

                                                      

 

Puis, nous arrivames a Wutai, un "gros" village avec un musee de la culture Rukai. Ils nous donnerent des explications en Chinois, nous leur demandames s'ils avaient quelque chose en Anglais, ils dirent que non. Dix minutes plus tard, la dame de l'entree courut apres nous, nous trouva au deuxieme etage du musee et nous donna fierement un fascicule en Anglais expliquant leur culture et leurs coutumes. Ces montagnards sont vraiment heureux de voir des Occidentaux et font tout ce qu'ils peuvent pour leur rendre la visite agreable.

When I see those ethnic hats... I want to get  one to wear in shul.... and I have already an interesting and VERY colourful collection... which is a nice change from the very classical and very boring hats worn by the normal Jewish ladies.(I'll show you my collection one day, you'll be surprised, but I wear them!)

  

Quand je vois tous ces chapeaux ethnics...je veux en acheter pour les porter a la synagogue... J'ai deja une interessante collection, tres COLOREE..... qui changent un peu des chapeaux elegants et ennuyeux des femmes juives normales. (Je vous montrerai ma collection un jour, vous serez etonnes, mais je les porte!)

We soon arrived in front of a church where the people were making Xmas decorations and preparations. Most of the village seems to be Christians. Sadly, the Missionnairies did the hell of a job there!

  

Nous arrivames bientot devant une eglise ou les fideles preparaient et decoraient pour Noel. Une grand partie du village semble etre christianisee. Les missionnaires ont fait des ravages.

After the museum and the visit of the village, we found a tiny outdoor restaurant where we ate a sesame pancake and a strange sweet dish... sort of genlatinous red soup...

Apres la visite du musee et du village, nous trouvames un tout petit restaurant dehors ou nous mangeames un "pancake" (crepe mais pas plate) et un drole de plat sucre... genre soupe gelatineuse orange.

Then we tried to find waterfall and we did....












Puis nous essayames de trouver une chute d'eau...que nous trouvames...

and more North East, a place with a place for butterfly observation.

et plus au Nord Est, un endroit ou l'on pouvait observer des milliers de papillons.

                       

                   

Then we went back to Kaoshiung as the sun was setting.Then dinner in a posh fish restaurant recommanded by our hotel.

          

   


Puis nous rentrames a Kaoshiung comme le soleil se couchait.  Puis diner dans un elegant restaurant de poisson recommande par l'hotel.
