On Saturday 28 March afternoon, Mark and I went to a "concert under a tree" at Kowloon Walled City. It was Cantonese traditional and popular music and songs. In fact we had never been to Kowloon Walled City we had read about it a lot, but never actually gone there.
Samedi 28 Mars, Mark et moi allames a "un concert sous un arbre" a la Cite Fortifiee de Kowloon. C'etait de la musique traditionnelle Cantonaise et des chansons populaires. En fait nous n'etions jamais alles a la Cite Foritfiee de Kowloon, nous avions lu des articles a son sujet, mais ne nous y etions jamais rendus.
It started as a small village, in the 1840s but was in the mid XXth century, built with high buildings very near to each others, very compact, which became the home of rather poor people but also of the Tryads (HK's mafia). Police did not enter the Kowloon Walled City, neither did any one not introduced by some of the inhabitants.No rule of law prevailed there and the government decided to destroy and erase it in the 1980s.
Le petit village fut construit vers 1840 puis au milieu du XXeme siècle construit avec des hauts batiments tres compacts et tres rapproches, habites par des gens assez pauvres mais aussi par les Triades (Mafia Hong Kongaise) La police n'entrait pas dans la Cite, pas plus que les personnes non annoncees et non accompagnees par des habitants. C'etait une cite de non-droit qui fut rasee dans les annees 1980..
Then they made a beautiful park where the city was, and rebuilt a replica of the old Chinese village.
Puis ils firent un parc a l'emplacement ou etait la ville, et reconstruisirent une replique du vieux village Chinois.
The destroyed city was not only unsafe for the inhabitants, with trafficking, gambling and prostitution, but also falling into pieces and electrically dangerous.
La cite detruite etait non seulement mal frequentee avec des traffics, du jeu et de la prostitution, mais aussi insalubre et dangereuse du point de vue electrique.
Our concert took place outside a lovely Chinese building with red lanterns. The orchestra had very noisy cymbals, strange sort of flutes, a gong.
Notre concert avait lieu dehors dans la cour d'un joli batiment Chinois avec des lanternes rouge. L'orchestre avait des cymbales tres bruyantes, et de droles de flutes, un gong.
Several ladies sang popular songs that the public seemed to love and to know by heart. That was very charming, the spectators were the real Hong Kong simple people, enjoying themselves on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.
Plusieurs dames chantaient des chansons populaires, que le public adorait et connaissait par coeur. C'etait charmant, le public etait les vrais Hong Kongais, s'amusant le Samedi apres midi par une belle journee.
The woman sitting next to me sang with the singers, with all her heart and told me all her life in Cantonese with many English words. She was a widow, had lost her husband 4 years ago, she had 2 daughters, one married to an English man and living in London.
Ma voisine chantait de bon coeur et me faisait la conversation en Cantonnais mele de mot Anglais... je ne comprenais pas grand chose. Elle etait veuve et professeur retraitee, son mari etai tmort il y a 4 ans et elle avait 2 filles, dont l'une mariee a Londres a un Anglais.
She then told me to eat less, and to drink more Chinese tea and to move more in order to loose weight. Then she sat on the ground and started doing yoga to show me how fit and souple she was. Mark could not believe his ears when I translated our hectic conversation, half Cantonese half English. Actually, I was having a great time and lots of fun with this friendly eccentric old lady.
Puis elle me dit de manger moins et de boire plus de the Chinois et de bouger plus pour perdre du poids. Alors elle s'assit sur le sol et commenca des exercices de yoga pour me montrer comme elle etait souple et en forme. Mark n'en croyait pas ses oreilles quand je lui traduisis notre bizarre conversation mi Cantonais mi Anglais. En fait je m'amusait drolement bien avec cette vieille dame originale et amicale.
Suddenly two men from the audience started fighting for a place, They were very aggressive and violent, so my new friend put her index on the side of her head to say "they are mad" and I could tell her my 2 favourite abuse words in Cantonese : Tssissin (stuck neurones) and Yao Mo Gaotcho Wa (Something is not stirring well in their head)
Soudain, deux hommes commencerent a se battre violemment pour une place assise, alors ma nouvelle copine mit son index sur sa tempe pour dire "Ils sont fous" et je pus lui dire mes deux injures preferrees en Cantonnais : "Tsissin!" (neurones bloques) et "Yao mo Gaotcho Wa!" (Ca ne tourne pas rond dans leur tete).
She said "very good!!!" and everybody around us looked at me in appraisal, repeating : "Yao mo gaotcho wa!!" I usually use those words when I scream at drivers who don't let me cross the road, so I was in delight to use them at last, in another circumstance.
Elle me dit "Very Good!" (Tres bien) et tout le monde autour de nous me regarda en approuvant e en repetant "Yo Mo Gaotcho wa!" mots que je hurle generalement aux conducteurs qui refusent de me laisser traverser la rue. Donc j'etais aux anges de pouvoir les utiliser enfin dans d'autres circonstances..
My new friend gave me 20 HK dollars (2 Euros)"for good luck" (in English) and others tiny presents. I had nothing to give her in return, so I tried to remove from my handbag a little Japanese charm that I had bought in a temple in Kyoto but she refused it as it came from a temple. "Keep it for your luck..."
Ma nouvelle copine me donna 20 HK$ (2 Euros) "Pour vous porter chance" (en Anglais) et autres petits cadeaux. Je n'avais rien a lui donner en retour alors je tentai d'oter un porte-bonheur achete dans un temple a Kyoto et accroche a mon sac a main mais comme ca venait d'un temple, elle refusa "Gardez-le pour vous porter chance"...
Then to my great delight, she showed me the photos of all her family, but after that she was busy singing and after that we left saying very moving By bye!.I am going to miss her...
Puis a ma grande joie, elle me montra les photos de toute sa famille, et apres ca elle fut tres occupee a chanter puis nous partimes en echangeant d'emouvants "Bye bye" Elle va beaucoup me manquer....
We had listened to the music for 90 mn, then walked around the beautiful garden where you could hear the concert even far away.
Nous avions ecoute la musique pendant 90 mn puis nous promenames dans le beau jardin d'ou l'on pouvait entendre le concert meme de loin.
