FINDING HORSERADISH IN HK/ TROUVER DU RAIFORT A HONG KONG

It's Pessah (Passover) and we, Ashkenazy Jews, use to put horseradish on our Seder plate, because it is bitter and "hot" so that it makes us cry when we eat it, which reminds us of how unhappy were our ancestors when they were slaves in Egypt. My hallenge was to find horseradish in Hong Kong.

C'est Pessah (la Paque Juive) et nous, Juifs Ashkenazes, avons pour coutume de mettre du raifort sur notre plateau de Seder, car il est tres amer et tres "fort" donc il monte au nez et nous fait pleurer quand nous le consommons, ce qui nous rappelle combien nos ancetres etaient malheureux lorsqu'ils etaient esclaves en Egypte. Il me fallait donc trouver du raifort a Hong Kong.

Of course, I thought of the Kosher supermarket in the synagogue, but they just sold horseradish in a glass jar, that is not at all "hot" and does not make you cry.

Je pensais bien sur au supermarche Cacher de la synagogue, mais ils n'avaient que du raifort en bocaux, pas du tout "fort" et qui ne fait pas du tout pleurer.

I looked on internet: Horseradish in Cantonese Laat Gan (spicy root) in Mandarin : Lat Gen ; there was the Chinese character which Mark printed for me, and I went to several supermarket near home...nothing then I went to Causeway Bay "wet Market" (street market)

Je cherchai "raifort" sur internet : en Cantonnais "Laat Gan" (Racine pimentee) en Mandarin Lat Gen, il y avait les characteres Chinois que Mark m'imprima et je me rendis dans plusieurs supermarches pres de la maison...rien alors j'allais au marche de rue de Causeway Bay.

I showed my paper to a shopkeeper, who called her boss for him to read the Chinese Characters. He read "Laat Gan" and said "Mo La!" (No more) Others shopkeepers did not lie and said more truely "Mo" "I don't have". One woman said something in Cantonese, which I did not understand, she insisted and showed me to an Indian shop (for her, Spicy (hot) means India - as they eat very spicy food).The Indian guy did not know Laat Gan but understood Horseradish and said to me "Not in Hong Kong" which I knew was not true..

Je montrais mon papier a une vendeuse qui appela son chef pour qu'il lise les 2 caracteres, il lut "Laat Gan" "Mo La!" me dit-il. (Il n'y en a plus) d'autres vendeurs moins menteurs me dirent seulement "mo" "Il n'y en a pas" . Une femme me dit des tas de trucs en Cantonnais que je ne compris pas et m'indiqua plus loin un magasin Indien. Pour elle "Piment", veut dire Indiens, eux ils mangent pimentes ils en auront peut-etre. L'Indien ne connaissait pas Laat Gan, mais put lire Horse radish et me dit "Il n'y en a pas a Hong Kong" ce qui, je le savais, etait faux.

Then I sent an email to our friend Barbara who lives in Tai Po (New Territories) and asked her to have a look in Tai Po huge street market. She came back to me saying she had asked the rabbi who said she could rather find horseradish in City Super supermarket, in Central. Barbara told me she would go at once and buy some horseradish and bring it for the Seder at our home. She then sent a 3rd email saying "I got one!!There were only two left!" 

J'envoyais alors un mail a notre amie Barbara qui habite a Tai Po dans les nouveaux territoires, et lui demandai de regarder dans le vaste marche de rue de Tai Po. Elle m'ecrit en retour et me dit qu'elle avait demande au rabbin qui lui avait dit qu'on en trouvait au tres onereux et tres chic supermarche de Central appele City Super. Elle me dit qu'elle irait de suite y chercher du raifort et qu'elle me l'apporterait pour le Seder chez nous.

As I am Ashkenaze and very neurotic as far as food is concerned I had already asked Mardee our helper to have a look in Stanley.No Horseradish, so I told Mardee that we should be OK if Barbara found some if not, I would use mild Horseradish in a jar and add some very hot small red pepper to it. I was relieved I had a Plan B.

Comme je suis Ashkenaze et completement nevrosee avec la nourriture, j'avais deja demande a Mardee notre bonne, de regarder a Stanley. Pas de Raifort a Stanley, je dis a Mardee que ca devrait aller si Barbara en trouvait encore a City Super Central, sinon j'utiliserai du raifort en bocal (pas tres fort) et lui adjoindrai du petit piment rouge tres tres fort. J'avais un plan B j'etais soulagee.

Mardee told me "You know there is a City Super in Causeway Bay, in Time Square" That is very near our home, so I went there and found plenty of horseradish... and got a nice one so we will have 2 of them.....which is too much but better too much than none!!! See how beautifull is my Causewaybay horseradish!!!! Thank you Mardee you are very clever!!
   

                                          

Mardee me dit "Vous savez qu'il y a un City Super a Causeway Bay, a Times Square" Ca, c'est tout pres de chez nous, alors je m'y precipitais et y trouvais plein de raifort...j'en achetai un beau, donc on en aurait 2... ce qui est un peu trop, mais mieux vaut trop que pas assez!!! Regardez mom beau raifort de Causewaybay!!! Merci Mardee, vous etes tres forte!!!

The Harosset is ready, the Matzah balls bought and ready to eat, we have got a new frig which can hold a lot of food so I don't have to shop so often. We are going to shul tonight for the first Seder and will be 10 at home for the second Seder tomorrow.

Le harosset est pres, les boulettes de matzah achetees donc pretes, et nous avons un enorme frigidaire qui peut enfin stocker de grandes quantites ce qui m'evite de faire tout le temps les courses. Nous allons a la shul ce soir pour le premier Seder et serons 10 demain a la maison pour le deuxieme Seder.

We went to see a magnificent show called Cavalia (I think I saw Jean Wong with friends the first day of the show, but I am not sure)

Nous sommes alles voir un magnifique spectacle appele Cavalia. (Je crois bien avoir vu Jean Wong avec deux amies, le premier jour du spectacle, mais je ne suis pas sure).

It was under a tent in Central, the show was made by ex-artists from the Canadian Cirque du Soleil. They had brought 40 splendid horses. (Since chilhood I have always loved horses). We are very fussy, Circus in Monaco was AMAZING, and this show was not technically great, the acrobats were fun but average, the riders "Dressage technique " was so so) but the scenery all around the tent, the music, the singers and the costumes were perfect and we had a great time.

This was my favorite part of the show two women dancing in the sky around two men on horses and dancing with them that was very special very innovative. (Photo program)

C'etait sous une tente a Central, le spectacle est fait par des anciens du Cirque du Soleil Canadien. Ils avaient amene avec eux 40 chevaux splendides. (Depuis mon enfance, j'adore les chevaux.) Le spectacle n'etait pas techniquement parfait nous sommes difficiles car a Monaco le cirque etait INCROYABLE tandis que les acrobates etaient amusants mais moyens et le Dressage (technique de haute ecole a cheval) etait tres moyen mais les decors tout autour de la tente, la musique, les chants,  et les costumes etaient parfaits. Nous nous sommes bien amuses.
