We are just back from 5 days in Beijing. We left very hot Hong-Kong (24 degrees C) last Tuesday afternoon, arrived 3h40mn later in Beijing which was very cold (-13) and covered with a thin layer of snow.
Nous sommes juste de retour de 5 jours a Beijing. Nous sommes partis Mardi apres-midi de Hong-Kong encore tres chaud (24 degres), et arrives 3h40 plus tard a Beijing tres froid (-13 degres) et recouvert d'une fine couche de neige.
Our guide and driver were at the airport and drove us to snowy Mutianyu 90 Km North of Beijing. It took us a while to get there, as it was dark and very cold and in the country, the small roads had not been cleaned of snow and ice....Our driver was very good and drove safely.
Notre guide et notre chauffeur nous attendaient a l'aeroport et nous emmenerent Mutianyu enneige, a 90 Km au Nord de Beijing. Cela nous prit pas mal de temps car il faisait deja nuit et tres froid, aussi les petites routes de campagnes etaient-elles glissantes avec la neige non deblayee et le verglas... Notre chauffeur etait excellent et tres prudent.

| Our bedroom had curtains below the window but nothing above the curtains so that the guests could see the view. Pretty but cold.... Notre chambre avait des rideaux en bas mais rien au-dessus des rideaux afin que les clients puissent voir la vue. Superbe, mais froid.... |
We arrived to our hotel in a tiny village not far from the Great Wall. We had dinner, then went to bed. Our hotel was a former village school and some of the buildings had high ceilings very hard to heat, but it was charming and welcoming. We walked up early and I took some photos then we had breakfast and went to the Great Wall.

Nous arrivames a notre hotel dans un petit village non loin de la Grande Muraille. Nous dinames et allames nous coucher. L'hotel etait une ancienne ecole primaire de village et certains de ses batiments etaient hauts de plafond et difficiles a chauffer, mais c'etait charmant et accueillant. Nous nous reveillames tot et je pris des photos puis nous primes un bon petit dejeuner et partimes voir la Grande Muraille.
We took a cable car to get there and soon saw the Great Wall from the cable car.
Nous primes un telepherique pour l'atteindre et vimes bientot la Grande Muraille depuis le telepherique.
I was so excited to see a tiny part of the huge, phenomenal, and so famous Great Wall, which took so long to build and re-build and which took so many lives of poor people who were forced labor to build it. It was bitterly cold and fortunately not windy, but the snow had turned into ice and I was so scarred of falling and hurting my knee again, so we did not walk very far but took our time to admire it as well as the magnificent scenery.
J'etais vraiment heureuse de voir meme une infime partie de l'immense, phenomenale, et si celebre Grande Muraille de Chine, qui prit si longtemps a construire et a re-construire indefiniment, et qui couta la vie de nombreux malheureux obliges de travailler a sa construction. Il faisait tres froid et heureusement il n'y avait pas de vent, mais la neige etait devenue de la glace et j'avais tres peur de glisser et de me blesser a nouveau le genou, aussi n'allames-nous pas tres loin, nous primes toutefois tout notre temps pour admirer cette merveille et le paysage sublime.
