HELPERS IN HK/ LES BONNES A HONG KONG

Yesterday Mardee, my helper arrived slightly late and very upset. She told me she was coming out of her flat when she heard a voice, imploring : "Please help me". She looked towards the voice, it was an Indonesian helper, who was running and limping .

Hier, Mardee, mon "employee de maison" comme on dit maintenant (ma bonne!) est arrivee un peu en retard et tres affectee. Elle me raconta qu'alors qu'elle sortait de son appartement, elle entendit une voix qui implorait" S'il vous plait, aidez-moi."Elle regarda vers la voix, c'etait une helpeuse Indonesienne qui courait en boitant.

Mardee asked her "what can I do for you"? the helper hardly spoke English, but showed Mardee her upper leg which had been badly burnt. She said in Chinese "soi yit" (hot water), she was in pain, was shaking, and looking very scared.

Mardee lui demanda : "Que puis-je faire pour vous?" La helpeuse parlait a peine anglais mais lui montra le haut de sa jambe qui avait ete gravement brulee. Elle dit en Chinois : "soi, yit" (eau chaude), elle souffrait, tremblait, et semblait avoir tres peur.

Mardee had to go to work (to us) but did not want to leave the woman in such a state. She asked? "Your employer? your boss?" showing the burn, the helper said yes." She threw the boiling water of a kettle to me;" Mardee called one of her friends who was still in her flat and told her to take the helper to hospital, she gave her money for a cab. At the hospital, the girl would be cured and there would be policemen to help the woman fill a complaint.

Mardee devait aller travailler (chez nous) mais ne voulait pas laisser la femme dans un tel etat. Elle lui demanda? "Votre employeur? Votre patron?" en montrant la brulure, la helpeuse acquiessa."Elle m'a jete l'eau d'une bouilloire." Mardee appela , une de ses amies qui etait encore dans l'appartement et lui dit d'emmener la helpeuse a l'hopital, elle lui donna l'argent pour le taxi. A l'hopital la fille serait soignee et il y aurait des policiers pour l'aider a porter plainte.

Mardee was under shock because the burn was huge and the helper in great pain. She did not know the girl who obviously worked in her block of flats, and ran away from of her employers without any money or papers, as she was so scared. She did not seem to have any papers (the employers or the agency often keept them which is totally illegal).

Mardee etait tres secouee car la brulure etait enorme et la helpeuse souffrait beaucoup. Elle ne connaissait pas cette fille qui visiblement habitait et travaillait dans son immeuble, et qui s'etait enfuie de chez ses patrons sans argent et sans papiers. (Les employeurs et les agences les gardent souvent ce qui est illegal.)

Later in the morning, Mardee got more news, the police came back with the girl so that she could bring some necessary clothes and items, and they took the employer to the police station, then the girl back to hospital because she needed more treatments.

Plus tard dans la matinee, Mardee a eu des nouvelles, la police etait venue avec la fille chercher quelques affaires et emmener la patronne au poste, puis avait ramene la helpeuse a l'hopital car elle avait encore des traitements.

You can occasionnally read such cases of ill-treatments on helpers. Generaly Indonesian or from Sri Lanka, because the Philppinos are better organized and know their rights. The Indonesian often are whithheld their papers and owe a lot of money to the agencies that payed for "training them as a maid", for their language courses, as well as for their plane tickets, then take an outrageous interest rate from the poor girls.

On lit occasionnellement des cas de maltraitance touchant des helpeuses. Generalement des Indonesiennes ou des Sri Lankaises, parce que les Philippines sont mieux organisees et connaissent bien leurs droits. Les Indonesiennes se voient souvent retirer leurs papiers et doivent beaucoup d'argent aux agences qui ont paye leurs "Formation comme helpeuses", leurs cours de langues ainsi que pour leurs billets d'avion, et qui en profittent pour prendre d'enorme taux d'interets sur les prets aux pauvres filles. 

The employers who abuse their helpers are often Chinese and sometime westerners.The girls are often too scared to fill a complaint. Mardee's rescued helper also said she just wants to go back home once she is out of hospital and not to get any compensation, and having to wait till the trial.

Les employeurs qui maltraitent leurs helpeuses sont souvent Chinois et parfois Occidentaux. Les filles ont souvent trop peur pour porter plainte. La helpeuse que Mardee a aidee, elle aussi, dit qu'elle voulait seulement rentrer chez elle et non obtenir des compensations, ni rester ici jusqu'au proces.

The condition of the Helpers in Hong Kong is unfair and very hard, few people are conscious of that fact, and many overwork them happily. Poor girls have very little choice they stay here and work very hard to repay the agencies, and afterwards, to feed their enlarge family in their home country.

La condition des Helpers a Hong Kong est terriblement dure et injuste, peu de gens en ont conscience et beaucoup les font travailler en abusant du systeme. Les pauvres filles n'ont pas le choix et restent pour rembourser les agences et ensuite pour financer leur nombreuse famille, chez elles, au pays.

I hope this one will come out Ok of all this terrible events, and I hope she will fill a claim so that her employers are punished.

J'espere que celle-ci se sortira au mieux de ces terribles evenements et j'espere qu'elle portera quand meme plainte pour que ses employeurs soient punis.
