Our second day in Bagan started very early : we had breakfast at 5 a.m as a bus came to fetch us at 5.30 a.m at our hotel to do an air balloon flight over Bagan. The balloon trip lasts between 45mn and an hour. It is supposed to be the best way to see Bagan, particularly at sunrise time.(Therefore the early start)
Mark and I had never been on a balloon before and I was slightly apprehensive : Is-it dangerous? Is it very cold up there? Is it bumpy and you are sick????
When we arrived to the taking of fields, the balloons were lying flat on the ground and the baskets were on their side. There were 12 of us + the very British pilot in each balloon's basket (they were huge balloons 30m high). As it was dark still we were given "a nice cup of tea or coffee" to cheer us up till the sun starts to rise.
Then it was dawn and they started putting cold, then hot air in the balloons (which took a while but was fascinating). Meanwhile we were given strict instructions : who would be where in the basket, what not to touch, what position to take in case of emergency or rough landing...There was a rehearsal of position in case of emergency landing. Meanwhile our balloon was becoming bigger and bigger, the basket was up and it was time to climb in....
Our balloon started rising slowly and the sight of Bagan lanscape was so beautifull!!! No more fear or apprehension, just awe and amazment!
We were slowly moving, following the winds which our pilot detected with great skill... we were passing just above the pagodas and temples and the pilot was turning the balloon so that everyone could see the most famous temples. I was in heaven!
