Our hotel in Samarkand had a certain charm it had a patio where we could have drink as well as try to get a very slow internet connection, and from our bedroom's window, we had the most amazing view on the walls surrounding the old city.

Notre hotel a Samarcande avait un certain charme, il avait une cour interieure dans laquelle nous pouvions boire un verre tout en essayant d'avoir une connection internet des plus lentes, et de la fenetre de notre chambre on avait une vue fantastique sur les murs de la vieille ville.
We then visited Samarkand starting with Ulugbeg Observatory and a small science museum next to it.

Nous entreprimes la visite de Samarcande en commencant par l'observatoire d'Ulugbeg et le petit Musee des Sciences juste a cote.
King Ulug Beg was the grand-son of Tamerlane and lived during the XVth century, he was a warrior as well as an astronomer who built the world largest 90 degres cadrant (a sort of gigantic sextant to explore the stars and the sky). Unfortunatly the observatory was destroyed by fanatic Moslems in 1449, but ruins of it still remain. Ulug Beleg managed thanks to his Observatory to calculate almost exactly the number of days in a solar year. (he was only a few hours wrong)

Le roi Ulug Beg etait le petit-fils du grand Tamerlain, il vivait au XVeme siecle et etait un guerrier ainsi qu'un astronome passionne qui construisit le plus grand observatoire du monde un cadran de 90 degres (sorte de sextant gigantesque) pour observer le ciel et les etoiles. Helas l'obsrvatoire fut detruit en 1449 par des Musulmans fanatiques mais il en reste encore quelques ruines. Ulug Beleg avait reussi a calculer grace a son observatoire le nombre de jours dans une annee solaire, exactement a quelques heures pres.
Then we visited the mosks and mausoleum of beautiful Samarkand.
Puis nous visitames les mosquees et mausolees de la sublime Samarcande.
